Telerehabilitation

The Telerehabilitation Clinic (TRC) was established in 2015 following a generous philanthropic donation by the Bowness Family Foundation. TRC services are based on UQ research conducted since 2003 by Professor Trevor Russell (Physiotherapy) and Professor Deborah Theodoros (Speech Pathology).

You will receive services from students who are being supervised at all times by a fully qualified and highly experienced health professional.

Referrals are not required to attend our clinics.

What is telerehabilitation?

Telerehabilitation uses the internet to deliver rehabilitation services to clients in their own home, workplace or local community, removing access barriers such as location, transport and mobility.

Our telerehabilitation services

We offer telerehabilitation in audiology, occupational therapy, physiotherapy and speech pathology.

Research tell us that the outcomes clients achieve from therapy through the TRC are just as good, if not better, than seeing a health profession in a more traditional, in-person clinic.

What to expect

We provide a holistic approach to your needs and work with you to provide a personalised therapy plan. Our telerehabilitation services are highly interactive and use equipment you already have access to, such as an iPad or webcam. Best of all, the internet-based programme we use is simple and easy to use, free to access for your therapy sessions, and most people already have experience using it.

How to prepare

What equipment do I need?

You will need either an iPad or computer/laptop with microphone and webcam, and a good internet connection. We may do a test call prior to sessions beginning to make sure your equipment and internet connection will work in a telerehabilitation session.

Do you use Skype?

No, we use Zoom to deliver secure rehabilitation services. The Zoom platform is free for you to access for your telerehabilitation sessions, and is very simple to use.

Do I need to purchase a Zoom license?

No, Zoom is free to access and use for clients receiving services through the Telerehabilitation Clinic (TRC).

What age clients do you see?

We see anyone from pre-prep children through to the elderly. Depending on the situation, there may be a support person at the client end (for example, a parent, spouse or teacher aide) to be our helper.

Can parents or carers attend sessions?

Yes! In fact, we request that parents or carers attend all therapy sessions. For some children, most of the therapy session will even be conducted with the parent or carer as we teach you the best ways to support your child at home or at school.

Can you deliver sessions into schools?

Yes, we have a lot of experience delivering services into schools. This requires a commitment from schools to facilitate the sessions with a local support person and equipment, and to provide an appropriate space for therapy to occur in.

Do I need to live in a rural or remote area to access these services?

No, our service is available to all clients who need to access rehabilitation services. Our aim in the TRC is to bridge this gap for people who otherwise wouldn’t be able to access services, whatever the reason.

Do you only offer telerehabilitation services during periods of COVID-19 lockdown?

Definitely not! We have been offering telerehabilitation services to the community since 2015. We have significant expertise in the area, which means you will receive the highest quality telerehabilitation service from our Clinic.
