Headache Clinic

Neck pain is a common complaint in people with headaches, which can have a considerable impact on quality of life, productivity and how headaches are managed.

Our neck pain and headache research unit at UQ has led research in neck pain, whiplash and headache worldwide, and has recently focussed on examining the role of the neck joints and muscles in those with neck pain associated with their headache.

Following our research we have formed a Headache Clinic to provide a service to the local community.

We aim to identify the causes or triggers of your neck pain and how it relates to your headache. We will work with you to determine whether specific neck treatments may be of benefit to you and will develop a plan to help you manage your neck pain and headaches. This will involve a comprehensive assessment of your neck function and may include hands-on physiotherapy, exercise and advice. This will be provided on a fee-for-service basis.

As we have a teaching focus for our future practitioners, our physiotherapists may have final-year UQ physiotherapy students observing in the Clinic to learn and appreciate the importance of a thorough physical evaluation for people with headache and neck-related pain and dysfunction.

Our specialised team of physiotherapists work with people with headaches such as:

  • Migraines
  • Tension type headaches
  • Cervicogenic headaches
  • Jaw related headaches
